Breast Cancer Showroom House

Breast Cancer Showroom House

On Milwaukee's East Side from June 6th until June18th is the Breast Cancer Showhouse. The proceeds raised during this event go to the Medical College of Wisconsin, supporting early stage breast cancer and prostate cancer research. It is an honor to be part of this event for my 7th year.

Visitors are invited to tour this year's beautiful Showhouse, as well as to visit the pop-up boutique located in the garage (30% of all sales are donated to the cause). You will find my jewelry and other vendors products in boutique as we remember loved ones affected by breast and prostate cancer. I do this in memory of my Aunt La Verne (pictured above) and many friends who battled breast cancer.

When I was 10 years old, my Aunt La Verne moved in with my family as she began her breast cancer treatment. Because I was just 10, I didn't understand how serious her illness was. I was just happy that she was staying with us for an extended period of time - we even shared a bedroom (I thought this was a real treat). She would read her bible to me each night, making me made feel special.

Every time I saw her, she thanked me for sharing my room with her. I would tell her it was a gift to me to have her. Decades later, I still cherish these special moments with my Aunt La Verne. Unfortunately, I have become far too familiar with the pain and heartbreak that comes along with breast cancer. The disease has afflicted so many of my own friends and loved ones. I have shared my Aunt La Verne's story with each of them, especially the happy ending: My Aunt passed away in her early 80's. She lived a long and full life and gave many women the courage to know they could also be a survivor.

This is why I'm involved in the Breast Cancer Showroom House. I hope you can pay a visit to this wonderful house and event (click here for hours and direction). For now,  I pray that we will find a cure for cancer someday.

Margie

Being Creative

Each year at the end of a show season, I wonder if I'm going to be able to come up with new jewelry designs for the next year. I'm always looking for inspiration and I never know where i'll find it. Sometime it takes just sitting down at my desk and getting to work. Creating is simply wonderful for the soul.

This is a picture of my desk, where I make all of my jewelry. I'm surrounded by all the materials I use to design. It really is truly an organized mess.  Even so, I know where almost every bead or clasp is - only an arm's reach away. Plus, I'm surrounded by windows which gives this space a peaceful feeling.

Once I finish a new piece, I always hope I'm not the only one who is going to like it. I still get excited when others buy and enjoy my jewelry.

Here's to hoping for inspiration in your life and mine.

XO,

Margie

Connecting with Others

Connecting with Others

With the New Year here and all my Holiday Boutiques over, I'm feeling very blessed by all the connections I've made through them. It's wonderful seeing the customers who come each year. In some of these connections I've even been fortunate enough make friends.

The other day I was having lunch with a friend who I met through my business and made the jewelry for both of her daughters weddings. As we were having lunch she said to me, "You're so lucky to have your business." My reply to her was that the best part about my business is the people I get to meet. I then told her about something that recently took place at a show. During this show, I was explaining to a woman what the symbolism behind the infinity bracelets is. As her two daughters were with her, I used her love for them to explain what the infinity symbol means saying, "It's like the love you have for your two daughters - it's never ending, it's forever." After explaining this to her, she began to cry. When I asked if she was alright, she informed me that her husband had recently passed and then she apologized for crying. I let her know it was okay to cry, especially with what she was going through.  At that moment I felt so honored to be there and (hopefully) help her with grief, even if it was only a little.

It really overwhelms me with how many wonderful people I've met through something I love to do. I hope you enjoy your jewelry purchases and you enjoy wearing them as much as I love making them. Thank you for coming out to the Holiday Shopping Events, and visiting my online store. I hope you all have a wonderful year and I hope to see you soon.

XO,

Margie

Let the Holiday Boutiques Begin!

Let the Holiday Boutiques Begin!

Finally, the season for festive, vibrant Holiday Boutiques is here. During this exciting time of the year, I often hear "Oh, I shouldn't be buying for myself, I should be buying for others." And I have certainly had this thought! But I figure, if I like it for myself, why wouldn't the person I'm buying it for like it too? Plus, Holiday Boutiques are such a special shopping destination that I try to not feel too guilty about finding an item or two for myself.

The best part about doing holiday shows is connecting with people. It is so rewarding working with someone to find the special piece they are looking for. Just last week, a person said to me, "I just had to bring my friend to see your jewelry. I knew she would love it". This simple comment made me realize this is why I love what I do. I feel so much gratitude to have a business that connects with other people.

I'm feeling very blessed as the Holiday Season begins. I hope to see you at one or more of the Holiday Boutiques.

All the best,

Margie

Fall Fashion Week - Jewelry Update

Fall Fashion Week - Jewelry Update
Part of my profession is to stay up to date with what is fashionable for the
upcoming season. In fact, Vogue posted a great article about fashion
week and the jewelry trends for Fall/Winter, 2016-2017. Click here to see
the article. Sometimes when I look at the models from fashion week,
I can't imagine wearing most of what they have on, even though
I still love seeing such wild creativity. This time it was nice to see
that even though some of the jewelry was a bit over the top for my taste,
I was actually excited about what I was seeing. In the picture below, it's all about
the pearls. You can wear them as a single strand or many layers.

Pairing longer pieces with a choker looks especially hip and trendy. So, you can
easily take what  already own and add a few pieces to easily update your look.
In the picture below,I love the look of mixing your pearls with other metal
necklaces. This takes a classic pearl necklace and adds a hip, modern twist.

With the weather changing it's exciting to go from our summer jewelry
to the layering look of the fall/winter jewelry. If you need help with updating your jewelry case please contact me at margieedwardsdesigns@yahoo.com.
Enjoy,
Margie

Story of the Gibson Girl Locket

Story of the Gibson Girl Locket

The term "Gibson Girl" refers to the woman of the popular pen and ink drawings of illustrator Charles Gibson, which came to represent the spirit of the early twentieth century in America. The Gibson Girl is probably the best remembered of the artist’s images. Some argue that the Gibson Girl was the first national standard for feminine beauty. The images of her epitomized the late 19th and early 20th century Western preoccupation with statuesque, youthful features, and ephemeral beauty. She was portrayed as the feminine ideal in elegant dresses, bustle gowns, shirtwaists, and terraced, shorter skirts. With her hair piled atop her head and a waist so tiny as to defy belief, the Gibson Girl represented a serene self-confidence that could surmount any problem. She was the independent women of the era*.

The lockets were part of the original marketing of the Gibson Girls.

Right now, these lockets are hard to find. When I'm looking for the lockets, I look for ones that are not monogrammed on the backside. This way, the person who buys one can personalize them. I also string them on pearl chains. This gives the vintage locket a modern twist.

I hope you enjoy the Gibson Girl Locket as much as I do.

Labradorite the Beautiful Irridescent Stone

Labradorite the Beautiful Irridescent Stone
Labradorite is my favorite stone. It goes with blue,
gray, and black clothing, which is pretty much my
entire wardrobe. Plus the iridescent color is
just so beautiful, that I find it hard to resist.

The labradorite is a stone with positive energy.
It is believed that while wearing this stone
you it will bring you positive energy. I do know one thing that
I love wearing my jewelry with labradorite and I always feel  good wearing.
I hope when you wear your labradorite Jewelry you feel the same way.

Pearls - Grandma Nelson

A few years ago my cousin sent me this beautiful picture of my Grandma, and it reminded me of what a wonderful lady she was. Looking at it closely, I noticed she is wearing pearls. Now, every time I look at this picture I smile because I not only love pearls but also love creating jewelry pieces with them. Often when I make a piece of jewelry that has no pearls, I will dangle a pearl off the closure. Pearls are a symbol of peace - with everyone's hectic schedules, who couldn't use more of it in their lives? This last weekend in the USA Today section of the paper fashion consultant Tim Gunn wrote how a strand of pearls are a "must have" for spring. You can find the article here:
I simply had to share this picture of my grandma and Tim's must have for this Spring with my customers. Pearls never go out of style and will always be fashionable.
That said, enjoy your pearls!

Graduation Gift Guides

Sometimes, it is tough finding the right gift for a graduate. What's nice about the pieces listed below is how they each have meaning to them. Every piece comes with an explanation about the symbol, making the gift extra special. In this way, the piece becomes more than just a gift, but also a symbol of the moment in time.
